Thanks all...
Thought I'd check compression before checking valve lash....... #1 and #2 are at 60lbs !

So..ordered head gasket set and new fuel pump.  It'll be a snap to change the pump while I'm at it with head and exhuast out of the way.

I'd look for a vacuum leak first. It's easy to check, it causes the symptoms you mention and it can happen suddenly.

fix your fuel pump.  It's possible that it was sucking air and now sucking more air. After you put in a new pump, you can look elsewhere if the problem still exists.

You might look at spark color, blue white, or if yellow it's weak. if so, try cleaning grounds and connections. I would also look for vacuum leaks.

In my case, I thought when the head was done during an engine rebuild that hardened seats were put in. That was not the case so about every 1000 miles the exhaust valve had recessed just enough for it not to close completely. Thus the off sounding exhaust.

You may also have a burnt valve. Before you adjust the valves, remove the rocker cover and use a stick of hardwood to try and hold each valve open slightly as the engine runs. If the note changes (gets rougher) the valve you pressed is holding well enough. When you encounter a valve that does not change the idle or miss when you hold it open, you've found a leaking valve. Adjustment may solve it, unless it is burnt or has a carbon deposit on it.

I'll also run a compression test

Check your valve adjustment. When I had a Subaru sounding exhaust it was a too tight exhaust valve so it was not closing all the way.

So my car has started to run like crap.  Tough to start and seems to be missing.
However, when I pull each plug wire off, idle still drops
It's a small bore, A series, Hif38, petronix.
I do know my mechanical fuel.pump leaks...but has been for some time and this running issue started all of a sudden.
