what is this 2-pin connector?

That is a temperature sensor in the elbow for the coolant line. It was 'obsoleted' with the thermostat housing update which used new temperature sensors.
You can eliminate that elbow/sensor with this updated coolant hose.

My 2013 Clubman Cooper S threw code P0171, which is a lean warning. While checking things out, I found the duct from MAF to the turbo was cracked. I ordered a new one. But when I removed the duct, I found a 2-pin connector underneath, with nothing connected to it. It looks too clean for me to think that "empty" is its natural state. I cannot find a connector "hanging" around.
