Thanks Ian... I don't even have the car yet, but as soon as I do, I'll have better info. I do have photos of the car without the wheels on, but I can't seem to post them here!

I think this post needs a little clarification.... S wheels won't fit the rear unless you use the S type spaced drums (or separate 1" spacers - but they're illegal where I come from).

And.. (as John explained) the reverse offset wheels were intended to give "ordinary" Coopers and other non S Minis the "S" look.  If fitted over early (7") discs or drums they will remain inside the original bodywork; i.e. no flairs needed. If, however, you fit them over normal S brakes (front and rear) you will need flairs ..like the ones in TheAustin's avatar.

Normal S wheels can be used over drums if you fit 4 of the extended drums as used on the rear of an S (and won't need flairs).

With the Cooper S wheels flares are generally not required. Thats the beauty of the Cooper S wheel specs ... wider wheel tucked into the fender wells. Since the offset pulls the wheel/tire inward the Cooper S wheels can rub on the steering/suspension if a Mini is not fitted with Cooper S brakes. 

There is another option, the reverse offset Cooper wheels. These were designed to fit the Cooper S style of wheel to a Mini with drum brakes all around. These will poke out about the same as the alloys already on your Mini. Not sure if anyone offers new reverse offset wheels currently so you might need to find a good used set if that turns out to be the direction you choose.

Either way you need to get your Mini and pop the wheels off to see what sort of brakes you have before moving forward.

Thanks, Spank! I'm really partial to the look of a more classic wheel, so I have my heart set on the ones on MiniMania. The good news is, the car does already have the flares!

Yes, 165/70-10 tire will fit the wheel. As Spank has touched on the question is will the wheels fit your Mini? These wheels require 7.5in disks and/or brake drums with the 1in spacer. 

I have the minilite 4.5" wide rims and the beauty of them is that 165/75-10 and 145-10 both fit and look pretty good on them. The wider tires MIGHT need flares, depending on your taste and the wheel offset. With the 145 tires, the flares aren't needed.

Again, this is subject to your local laws and your personal preference as well as the wheel's offset. But I personally like the 4.5" wide rims I have because I don't CLEARLY need to run with flares.

edit: if you are running drums or discs is also an influencing factor-- I have S discs up front and minifin spacered drums in the rear and, again, I'm on the edge of Flares of No Flares.

Does anyone here know if the Classic Austin Mini Cooper S Wheel 10 x 4.5 Aluminum wheel offered on MiniMania will take a 165/70R10 tire? And if not, any recommendations on an appropriate tire? (For an MKII, general use, not racing).
