typically, when the clutch hydraulics start to go, it's usually reverse and first that start to get harder to get into followed by 2nd gear being difficult.
good luck

Thanks for the info. That is what I was thinking as well. Also just found out that either my master or slave cylinder for the clutch is failing so I am going to replace both of those first along with the line that links the two. Hopefully that solves my problem. (fingers crossed)

I've experienced this TWICE. The first one was... get this... the "rebuilt gearbox" was actually MISSING the baulk ring for 4th gear!
The second time was the bearings on the 1st motion shaft were shot. the needle roller, the ball bearing, and the one in the clutch housing cover.
The friction material on 4th gear could be worn or flaked off so the baulk ring can't grab as it is designed.
Whatever the problem, it's an engine-out job and you'll need to split the engine from the trans. You may need to be prepared to buy a replacement clutch housing cover and possibly an entire gearbox.

Hello All,
I just purchased a 1966 Riley Elf with a later model 998cc engine and rod change gearbox. The transmission has a crunch when shifting from 3rd to 4th (downshifts from 4th to 3rd just fine). Also, if I shift from 4th to neutral it will not shift back into 4th again unless I downshift to 3rd then up to 4th. All other gears shift normally. Any ideas on what could cause this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Justin
