first and reverse both use the same gear in the cluster / same syncro ring (not to be confused with just "baulk ring"). Those syncro teeth (or, if non-syncro first then just call them "engagement teeth") loose their point and round off and hence shorten. There's now less area making contact / meshing and as they push away from each other, the moment when they disengage comes sooner. Trying to hold it in gear by hand means you are using some thin bronze fingers (selector forks) to overcome however many ftlbs of torque your engine produces.
At minimum, replacing the gear-engaging selector ring is required. But that's just a band aid or temporary patch, if it works at all. Replacing the laygear as well as first gear and the 1/2 syncro is what is entailed.
Of course, I'm not addressing the possibility that the layshaft could be / is bad, the mainshaft bearing is or could be bad, or the case itself is bad from side-loading and everything that is supposed to mesh is merely spreading apart

I would suspect the cluster gear. I converted my minor to a rib case tranny.

I purchase a 1958 MM Traveler in pieces, been restoring it and putting it back together. I took the side cover off the transmission and bench shifted it and everything looked fine. It went in to all the gears and turning the shaft by hand all gear appeared to work. I installed the transmission and when I try to drive it, the transmission pops out of first as soon as you start to let out the clutch. It does the same in reverse. You can not even hold it in gear it pops out with force. You can start out in second and drive in second, third or fourth appear to work fine it is just first and reverse.
Anyone have any Ideas where to look for the problem and how to fix it?
