It's a bit of a balancing act. You have to set the timing to work with the grade of fuel you are using and the condition/build of your engine. Retarding the timing will make spark knock, detonation, and pinging less likely but it will also lower the power output of the engine. Retard the timing until the bad noises go away, then turn your attention to setting the mixture.

Detonation or pinging? Retard the ignition advance 2 degrees.

Yes.

So frustrating. We’re in the middle of moving to a different state and I don’t have the time to troubleshoot/repair.

If he had it running rich, carbon buildup may have caused pinging. When he leaned it out a bit and the pinging went away, he probably resolved the issue.

Issue after issue w/ the Mini. When driving, the car makes a clicking noise and ‘feels’ like it’s about to stall. So I let off the gas and it’s fine. It does this primarily in 2d and 3d fear when I’m accelerating. Any ideas what it could be? The clicking noise almost sounds like when you crank the car. It it doesn’t turn over, if that makes any sense?
