Yes, the A+ has an .875" idler shaft. 

Can you actually use shims like that to make up the space removed without any ill effects?

Those look like stationary shims and are not meant to spin. Like the kind you add to the end of you crank to set your lower timing gear alignment.

In a bit of trouble here. My gearbox/transfer cases are both show wear from the idler gear and wondering my options. My machinist is less then keen to take on this job as its is VERY time consuming in setup and he can not guarantee perfection at this moment. I said I would ask around a bit to weigh out some options. I have a few questions.

1: Wondering if anyone on here has experience taking on this job and could give me an idea what they would charge for the service?
2: Does anyone have set of good, usable cases for the A+ (from a 94 Cooper) they are selling?
3: Can anyone recommend a place that has done this in the past. I am in New Jersey if that helps/hurts

I spoke with John at Guesworks in the UK and he can provide 15thou over shims, but only that size as his surface grinder is currently offline.
